I am intrigued by the texture of nearly any surface, real or visual. The textures in my own work are sometimes studied and intentional. Other times, they evolve intuitively. My textures are created by combining a variety of materials. Palimpsest, Spiral, and Red Corner are pulp paintings on handmade paper. No additions of collage or stitchery are needed. Palimpsest and Spiral remind me of the imagery of cave paintings that I teach as an art historian. Through cuts, slices and peelings of the surface, Flamingo appears as some sort of prehistoric creature that has yet to evolve into its known form. Five is when it all happened, when adulthood took over, when childhood ended. All of these surfaces reveal the texture of a life as visual expression. |
