Judith R. Shamp

I explore issues of ordering and chaos within the realm of textiles and other fibers. I draw, fuse, and layer colors and make marks with a hot-knife tool. The other tools are sewing machines and related acoutrements. A metaphor for the confusion/order of life is the discovery I make as mathematical connections, mirroring images, and incongrous objects converge to characterize a theme as I intuitively play/work.

The act of art making, especially with textiles/fiber (everyday stuff) allows making connections between disparate ideas to create meanings. Remembrances, fleeting moments, and conscious/unconscious come forth in this process.

Recent imagery relates to a life-long fascination with and wonder of insects. Based on an ancient Japanese craft form, many wide-ranging textile techniques have found expression within these popular chirimen bags, aka cicadas. One was awarded the 1997 Fine Arts Fashion Award, Accessories Category, The Textiles and Costume Institute, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
