These banners name women who have contracted breast cancer. Friends, family members and those who are personally affected are submitting names in order to show honor, bring recognition, a provide a united voice for research into the prevention of breast cancer.

White represents the purity of their life spirit.

Red inserts are sewn with a black zig-zag stitch to symbolize the heart monitor that marks the last days of women dying from cancer.

Within the red inserts are two graphic symbols associated with the mammogram machine. Look for the X which represents the X-rays. Look for the open rectangle which signifies the plate of the machine and the photographic negative.

Women who pass five years are said to be survivors. The four black banners are for the women who did not survive their fifth year.

The top of each unit is wrapped in cord to symbolize the strength and binding together which occurs within this cadre of women fighters

Bells, traditionally in the cages of canaries taken into mines, warned miners of unhealthy situations.
